SSMF Annual Review Meeting 2008

An Annual Review Meeting of SSMF will be held in New Delhi from 31 May - 1June, 2008. The meeting will be held in USO House, 6 Special Institutional Area, New Delhi. The meeting will be attended by all the staff members of school Adharshila and members of SSMF. The purpose of the meeting is to have a comprehensive discussion on the challenges and achievements in past years of SSMF and its project Adharshila. The meeting will be emphasised on the Enhancement of Quality Education in Adharshila, for which various resource persons from different education fields have been invited to give a brief on the teaching methods, child psychology respectively to the staff members of Adharshila.

An excursion will also be arranged for the staff members of SSMF and Adharshila.

We have also invited our supportors/donors for half day to meet the staff members of Adharshila and discuss and give ideas on the progress of the project.

A brief on the meeting will be posted soon with pictures.

Class V is ready!

Well in time for the acedemic year, the infrastructure for the fith class is ready. The new classroom with its furniture and fixtures would be used by the student who have graduated from the 4th grade.
The general cost of building and material has increased, making it about 20% more expensive to build this section of the building than the earlier classes.

Adarshila Gets its own BUS ... Finally

We just got word, that the bus which we have been "looking for" for a long time is finally in place. The earlier experience of the school buying a bus had gone wrong due to the back condition that the bus was in - however, this bus will go a long way in addressing the acute problem of transportation for the kids.
About 50 kids can be accommodated in the bus and it will allow us to cater to a larger geography. It will also make the transportation save and convinient.
Needless to add, the kids are having a great time riding their school's new bus.

Anwar's trip to Adharshila was a landmark success with him spending quality time with the teachers - motivating and educating them about best practices being followed at The Learning school. He shared his vast experience on handling subject matter and parental expectations with the eager audience.

It was good to see immedeate implementation of a number of initiatives as suggested by him and the impact which it had on kids.

Anwar was also able to spend time with the kids and talk about his experiences, while motivating them to perform better.

It was also a great opportunity for the local villagers to meet and develop an understanding about how people live on the other side of the border. Anwar met people across the village and shared his views on education, development and everything else which people wanted to discuss.

Anwar also a planted a sampling in the school and discussed some basic structural & layout changes which might make the functioning of the school better.

One of the founders of The Learning School in Pakistan and a constant support for Adharshila, Muhammad Anwar, would be visiting Adharshila on 4th and 5th of Oct, 07. He has been an inspiration for all of us at SSMF and has been supporting us with tips and suggestions over the past 4 years.

While at Adharshila, he would be conducting intensive teachers' training program and sharing his experiences of establishing and growing The learning School in Pakistan from it's humble start to its iconic status as a fine institution for quality education today.

The "new" bus does its 1st run.

Finally the school bus has arrived and it did its 1st run on 22nd of August and it was'nt without hick-ups. Our new driver is still trying to get used to running the bus on the narrow unmaintained roads, but the kids are a happy lot - getting a ride in the new pride of Adharshila.

Independence Day Celebrations

The students and teachers celebrated the Independence day on 15th of August by putting up a cultural show open to all and attended by about 900 people, which included the proud parents who watched their kids on the stage.
The function was graced by the MLC of the region and the gram pradhan.

Adharshila aquires its own school bus.

Adharshila was in desperate need to improve its capacity to transfer students from the areas around the school. Anand Vahan, has been extremly useful for the last two years but fortunatly, the number of students has increased to a point where they cannot be accommodated in the SUV - resulting in multiple trips by the SUV thus incurring high costs.
For the last 3 months we have been struggling to find a solution, and thanks to a timly intervention by one of the trustees, we have managed to procure a mini bus which should take care of our needs for the at least the next 15 to 24 months.

After a well deserved summer vacation, the school is set to reopen on 2nd of July, Monday. The number of students who will start the session in the 5 classes are 171 with a expectation of another 10-12 late admissions.
The faculty staff has been in attendance for the last week, preparing the session papers and discussing the teaching methods.
The big problem forecasted is the transport arrangement needed to ferry the additional students from the villages in the vicinity. The single vehicle "the Anand Vahan" is going to be in-effective to carry all the students.
All suggestions to address this problem are welcome.

Tax exemption for the foundation

Finally ... thanks to the efforts put in by the auditors of the foundation AK Nair & Co, and personally by Arvind Nair the foundation has been given the income tax exemption by Government of India via Exemption No. i.e. DIT(E)2007-2008/D -1248/362 dt.30.5.2007 stating that the exemption is valid from 1.4.2006 to 31.3.2008.

All donars to date will be send the notification for the same by post. Please avail of the same.

Also please do continue to donate for the causes of SSMF.

As adharshila closes down for a month during the summers - its 2nd summer vacation... it is time to reflect :

We are going into the vacations with 171 students. WOW ! Thats an avarage of about 35 per class. Thats 171 families, who have seen value in sending their kids to us for us to build a bright future together. We expect to enroll about 10 more students when the school restarts in July.

Also taking a break are the 6 teachers, who have ensured that not a single day of education was lost during the course of the 2 years - yes.. not a single working day was missed out... very unlike how other schools function in the rural parts of the country.

Also taking a break is the school infrasturcture - well actually not. It is time to repair the minor damages which it faces on account of elements. What we have managed to do is to set-up 5 classes, a computer room with 3 computers, an office for the teachers, a playground for the students with swings and game areas, toilets, safe drinking water. Not to mention the small garden.

Also taking a break is the school transport.. whew... esp with no proper roads.

Most importantly also taking a break are our little boys and girls. They are the jewels in the system - the once who have put in the maximum in the year gone by. They deserve the one month long holiday the most. Happy vacations !!

However, there is a plan to try and do a number of things over the next 45 days:

1. A overall review meeting with all teachers and trustees.
2. A launch of the "scholarship program" to cover more students.
3. To try and develop a larger network of supporters for Adharshila.

The number of people who needed vision check and recommendation on next steps was high and predominently women and old folks, probably due to their inability to travel to towns for the check-up.

100 plus people had to be examined on this and given a new "view" of the world.

The 2 days were action packed and addressed the needs of over 300 people around the village of Kohra. The people who attended the free camp, besides the students of Adharshila, were kids of all ages, lots of women and old folk - who do not travel to the towns for treatment.

Dr. Malvika and Saurabh work long hours (much longer than initially envisaged) to address the huge rush of people.

As the days of the eye camp draws closer, so does the need to tie up the loose ends. There is a lot of intrest and exictment amongst the local population who want to attend this free eye camp.

Malviya and Saurabh are pulling together the needed medicine while we have purchased the trial set and and other equipment needed for the testing of the eyes. Malvika also managed to take time off from her hospital shedule in New Delhi for the two days.

We are relying on some basic publicity (banners) and a strong viral and word of mouth generated by students, their parents and villagers at large. The coverage is abot 10 villages in the vicinity of Kohra.

The camp is sheduled for half day on 14th and half day on 15th, however, we are not very sure as to how many people would we be able to address besides the 151 students. The plan is to try and do a screening with about 250 people.

After much discussion and debate, we have decided to take the SSMF initiative to the next level and try and look at going a step beyond education to try and assist more people from the area. Friends of the foundation - Dr. Malvika Gupta and Saurabh Shrivastava, have come forward to take this noble cause forward.

Saurabh has been involved with the foundations' activities since the inception, and since their marraige only 2 months ago, his wife Malvika has joined in the cause as well. Malvika is a practising doctor with a specialization in Othomology.

With Malvika's area of expertise and the crying need of help on the ground, we have decided to set-up an eye camp and clinic in Kohra on the 14th and 15th of this month. We would all be travelling over to Kohra along with Saurabh and Malvika to make this activity a big success.

Our support organization has done it again !! FNST New Delhi has come forward to again contribute computers for the Adharshila in Kohra. This time they have contributed 2 machines, which will take the tally of the computers in use by the students to 4.

Adharshila has a unique computer education method, where in the kids are encourged to get familar with the computers from the time they join the school, thus removing the hesitation which most kids from rural India have when confronted with computers in their life.

Adharshila is one of the rare schools in the area to have computer education and that too built-in to the education and class work.

Starting April 2007, the computer education would also be open to non-students of Adharshila, so as to bring in confidence and learning.

The students and teachers are allgearing up for the annual day festivities on the 24th of November. The cultural events would be preceeded by the competitive sports activities. The annual day would also see a huge fete organized within the school premises. The last event show a turnover of over 4000 people from the nearby areas.

The New Road.... Finally

After a number of representations to the local authorities and to the local represenatives of the people, the work on a 4km stretch of road, linking the villages near Adharshila is finally started. The requirment of the road was a primary concern of the people of the area and will go a long way in ensuring that people and their goods have a quicker, safer and easier access to areas around.
This road will also make life much easier to the student of Adharshila, who can now commute to the school easily and in a safe manner.
The transport facility provided by the school can also cover a larger geography and hence provide access to more villagers to quality education at Adharshila.
The road is expected to be completed by end of October 2006.

An Annual Review Meeting of SSMF was held in New Delhi from 16-18 June, 2006. The meeting was attended by SSMF Trustees, Principal of school Adharshila and Administrator of SSMF. The purpose of the annual review meeting was to have a formal and comprehensive discussion of the past year of SSMF and its project ADHARSHILA. The project was evaluated critically. The meeting was emphasized on the Enhancement of Quality Education in ADHARSHILA. At the meeting the following points were discussed :

- Probability of other SSMF Projects for the development of village Kohra

- Curriculum was devised for the school Adharshila from classes Nursery to class III.

- Transport arrangement for the students (40 nos.) who are coming outside of the village was discussed.

- School Expansion : Class III has been started from this academic year i.e. 2006-2007. The construction of Class IV will be started soon.

- Teaching Method : A resource person was invited from a reputed school in New Delhi to give her input on new teaching methods.

Cmdr. Bhaskarn & Mrs Bhaskarn came forward to provide a huge help to the school. When discussed the problems being faced by the students of the school in reaching the school and then getting back to their homes due to the bad roads... they went out of their way to gift their own vehicle (an ideal Tata Sumo) to the school.

The vehicle, a very well maintained and a much loved car, will go a long way in ensuring that more and more students are able to find their way to Adharshila and hopefully make a big future for themselves.

The car.. which has been renamed as "ANAND Vahan" in the fond memory of the young and brilliant Dr. Anand Bhaskarn, son of Cmdr and Mrs Bhaskarn, will hopefully over the years, touch the lifes of a number of kids and will brighten their futures.

The admistrator of Adharshila has tied up with local transporters and vehicle owners to provide safe, releable and economical transport options for the kids from adjoining villages. This effort, has been apprciated by all and has ensured that the number of kids who can receive quality education has gone up and the area covered by Adharshila has also increased.

2 more teachers have been taken on roll to ensure quality teaching and attention to each child at adharshila. One of the teachers would assist with the Nursery class, while the other will teach the 1st standard along with the handling of the computer classes at Adharshila.

With these two additions the total staff strength has gone up to 6 as on July 2005. The student strength is currently 94 with 6 more expected to join this week. It is expected that the total strength for this year would be in the range of 100 to 110.

Adharshila - Launched.

Adharshila has been launched... formally. On the 2nd of July 2005, the rains almost washed of the entire launch event. It poured through the morning and afternoon, enough to clog all lanes to Adharshila. Then at around 1600hrs the skys cleared up just for long enough to allow the launch ceremony to take place.

The simple ceremony, was a welcome speech followed by the address of the Chairperson (see below), followed by some fantastic performances by the school children. The VIPS and special invitees shared their views with the villagers who had turned up in large numbers inspite of the downpour.

The ceremony ended with a tree plantation drive, followed by a fireworks display.

More importantly, 80 students have joined Adharshila and the teachers have their hands full in order to ensure quality education.

On behalf of Dr Surjan Singh Memorial Foundation (SSMF), I would like to thank you for your contribution to make our mission a reality. We could not have achieved without your support. Your donation played an integral part in the fun and success of our project.

The first phase of construction of Adharshila is completed and the classes in Adharshila started from 11th April, 2005 for a month. It was a wonderful success. We took pictures on the first day of school which has been posted on the website www.adharshila.net.

We have hired teaching staff for Adharshila comprises of one Principal and three teachers. We plan to hire three more Junior teachers for the session. All our teachers are well qualified and enthusiastic about making a difference to the lives of the children.

In the first phase we have started the school with three classes from Nursery, first and second standards. The daily schedule starts with the children being picked up from their homes. The Centre-recognized curriculum is taught in English and due importance is given to the local language.
Apart from the standard English medium Centre-recognized curriculum, the school focuses on the overall personality development of the child. Special attention is given to values, health and hygiene because of the socio-economic background they come from. Sports form an important aspect of the daily curriculum. Some students like to water and take care of plants.

Children’s Development centers have been started where creative activities have been initiated. Children are involved in creative activities for over all development. Story telling, games, songs, dance and various physical exercises and sports are some of the activities children enjoy at the centers. Computer education and special English classes were started in the Center. The children were very happy to participate in the center.

The children were delighted to see the first ever computer in the village. Thank you once again for your generous support in our efforts to brighten the future of the children of Adharshila.

We would like to invite you to visit Adharshila and look at the impact of project activity. We are organizing a formal inauguration of Adharshila on 2nd July, 2005 in village Kohra, District Ghatampur, Kanpur at 1645 hrs. I just came back after a four day stay at Kohra and I have got great news.

1. The school has started and 57 students in the three classes have already started to attend. The adminstrator is confident of taking the number of students to the targetted 120 by July, which is when the school would be fully operational.

I met the kids and they were thrilled to have new furniture, computers, toys and books. Each and every kid that I spoke to was looking forward to his next day in school. Check out the pitcures.

2. The school building is nearing completion and the classroooms are looking large and airy.

3. The staff (at least 3 of the 4) are good and comparable to the bigger schools. So we are on the right track.

The 11th of April, 2005 was the 1st day in the existance of Adharshila. The day started with paryers which were attended by the new students of Adharshila. The students were excited about being part of the experience of Adharshila and some of them (the nursery students) have started their education from Adharshila.

The brightly coloured furniture, the audio visual equipment and the teaching aids have all added to the new experience for the students.

The teachers and villagers have shown a lot of excitement as well. For everyone, this day saw the realisation of dream of years.

The construction for the project and final finishing still taking about 20 days longer than anticipated. However, to ensure that we do not miss out on the acedemic session, a solution was suggested by the Gram Panchayat.

The Panchayat Bhawan would function as interm school till the project site is complete.

The hired teachers have already started attending school and preparing for the opening. The opening with students coming in would happen on the 10th of the month. 10th of April 2005 would be the founders day.

After years of planning and a short 6 months of working on the concept of Adharshila, it is finally taking shape. Thanks to the support of friends of Adharshila - Adharshila is now ready for it's 1st batch of admissions.

The "call for admission" has received a very positive response from not only Kohra but all the villages around the area. In fact, people from the close by town have also shown intrest in wanting to join up the school.

The transparent method of enrollment has been welcomed by all. As on date close to 35 students have registered for admission.

There are winds of change at Kohra

"After generations of apathy, there are sudden moves of development across the village," the villagers tell us this. It is also visible to anyone who ventures there. Two huge changes are taking place currently (and we are not suggesting that we brought about these changes, although we have been campaigning for the same with the right authorities.)

1. The main street of the village is being re-laid. And this time with RCC Concrete. The "on road" drainage has been changed to drains on the side of the road. (refer to the pics uploaded in this blog). This might appear to be simple to most folks around the world, however, for Kohra - this is the biggest thing happening this decade or more.

2. We might get electricity to the village - finally !! We are hoping that we will be successful within the next 30 days or so. SSMF met up the local officials and persuaded them to set-up a Bijli (electricity) Camp in Kohra. The camp is to be set-up on the 18th of March. We have also worked with a number of persons across the village to access the desire to have electricity in their houses.

We are hopeful that we would see this huge development taking place in the next 30 days or so. So by the time Adharshila welcomes it's 1st student, there would be light in most houses.

The call out for registration in the three classes has gone out and would be on a 1st come 1st served basis with a limitation of 40 students per class and with a teacher to student ratio of 1:20. Registration would close on 20th of March 05.

Funds Collection for phase 1 - status

The collection of funds for phase 1 is going well. As on date we have just acrossed the INR 500000/- mark, with additional commitments for INR 100,000/- over the next month or so. (this is against the backdrop of a total requirement of INR 900,000/- for the 1st phase)

All the collections so far have been from friends and family with over a hundred people coming together to raise the necessary funds.

So far no funds have been generated from the FUNDING AGENCIES. We are hoping that some of them would come forward and speed up the process.

Adharshila and SSMF have received huge support from the enthusiatic and supportive creative and web team of Sercon. All design support, from logo unit to website has been designed and maintained by this team. They have been very supportive thru' our numerous changes and re-changes.

Ajay Batra of http://www.ajaybatraarchitects.com/ has been the person behind the unique drawings of Adharshila. He has brought in his unique design sense along with the understanding rural techecnologies to create the low cost, yet high quality solution for Adharshila.

His Custer based design has enabled phase wise growth of Adharshila.

Ajay has devoted his time, energy and expertise at no cost to the trust.

Teacher training at Adharshila gets a major boost.

Mrs. Shashi Malhotra who runs the hugely successful "Child Care" - a play school at New Delhi, had consented to visit Kohra along with some of her collegues and train the local teachers on the methods of teaching and training of infacts.

Besides the training of teachers, Mrs. Mlahotra has also agreed to provide technical support for setting up the design of the syllabus.

The construction of the 3 classes, the utility room and the office is getting along well. The roof is to be laid out, the construction has been done till that level.

Retd Capt. Ram Avtar Singh, has joined SSMF and would be the project adminstrator. The will be looking after the timing completion of the project. Capt. Singh hails from the village of Kohra and has worked in the Indian Army and a number of private enterprises. Capt Singh has also been awarded by the President of India for his exemplary service.
